Sustainable development and carbon emission reduction are key global research priorities. Buildings, as the largest energy-consuming sector in society, account for 30–40% of global energy use and approximately 40% of carbon emissions. Significant reductions in building energy consumption and carbon emissions are expected by managing solar irradiation and thermal radiation on demand. Intelligent electromagnetic-wave–regulating materials, which can dynamically alter their physical properties to control solar and thermal radiation, provide a foundation for these emerging energy and sustainability technologies. Dr. Ke will present advances in intelligent materials and structures and their applications in energy-saving smart windows, switchable radiative cooling, and structural-color information storage, with an emphasis on materials design, opto-mechanical multiphysics analysis, and potential applications in the energy sector. This will include his work on reconfigurable deformable materials that demonstrate substantial solar-thermal modulation performance and novel functionalities inspired by traditional paper-cutting art and biological systems.
