Abstract
Reversible metal electrodeposition enables dynamic modulation of optical transmittance, reflectance, and absorptance through electrically driven reduction and deposition of metal ions and oxidative dissolution of the resulting metal films. This approach holds promise for smart windows, automotive light modulation, and low-power reflective displays. This paper explores coordinated design strategies for electrode interfaces, electrolytes, and device architectures to meet application-specific requirements for optical modulation range, switching speed, cycling stability, and optical state retention. The roles of gel electrolytes and flexible barrier encapsulation in enhancing device mechanical adaptability and environmental stability are also examined. Furthermore, the relationships between metal deposit morphology, film connectivity, and optical response are analyzed in the context of light and heat management in smart windows, switching between transmissive and reflective states in automotive devices, and color tuning in reflective displays. Finally, key challenges are discussed, including uniform switching over large areas, operation over a wide temperature range, and long-term cycling reliability.
