摘要
Five Decades of Chromogenic Materials Research at ISSP, University of Latvia
Chromogenic coatings (electrochromic, thermochromic, photochromic, etc.) are the core technology for developing Smart Windows, which will play an important role in energy saving in the near future. In the EU HORIZON project "Smart windows for Zero Energy Buildings," new chromogenic single and multi-layered transition metal oxide (TMO) thin films of ReO3-WO3 [1], MeO-IrO2 [2,3], WO3/Cu/WO3, and rare-earth metal oxy-hydrides (REHO) YHO [4, 5] were developed and fabricated by advanced Reactive High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (R-HiPIMS) technique and industrially scalable roll-to-roll (R2R) technology for applications in Smart Windows. Thin films of rare-earth metal oxy-hydrides (REHO) are a new class of inorganic mixed-anion materials with a prominent photochromic effect and a light-induced resistivity change.
Here we examine chromogenic metal oxides of tungsten, molybdenum, iridium, nickel and mixed oxides and compare them to related crystalline species in order to set a foundation for the structure-property relationships in these oxides. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an ideal non-destructive technique for characterising chromogenic materials, devices as well as for in-operando study chromogenic processes. Synchrotron radiation XAS, comprised of both the high-resolution near-edge structure (XANES) and extended fine structure (EXAFS), is element sensitive to the local physical and electronic structure about both the metal (W, Ir, Mo, Ni, etc.) and oxygen target atoms in the chromogenic oxides. Starting from our pioneering works in the 90s, we have applied XAS to the study of cathodic electrochromic oxides such systems as WO3, WO3-NiO, MoO3, ReO3-WO3 [5] and to anodic oxides such as NiOx, IrOx, and recently ZnO-IrOx, NiO-VOx, NiO-IrOx. In the study of thermochromic materials, XAS has been applied to V(W)O2, CuWO4-ZnWO4, and recently, to the photochromic YH3 and Y-O-H systems [4,5].
Financial support was provided by the Project “Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings” (SWEB) GA nr. 101087367.

Full Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences
Head of the Thin Films Laboratory, Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL)
Professor Juris Purāns is an internationally recognized scientist with 50 years of experience in chromogenic materials, functional oxide thin films, and synchrotron radiation spectroscopy. He received his Master's degree in 1976 for research on electrochromic materials, marking the beginning of his scientific career in chromogenic materials. In 1993, he obtained his Doctor of Habilitation degree for pioneering XAFS studies of transition-metal oxides and superconducting materials.
In 1993, he established the EXAFS Laboratory at ISSP UL, and in 2017, founded the Thin Films Laboratory, specializing in advanced deposition technologies, including HiPIMS, PLD, and MOCVD. His research focuses on electrochromic, thermochromic, and photochromic materials for smart windows, as well as superconducting and ferroelectric oxides. He has made significant contributions to understanding local atomic structure, electronic properties, and anharmonicity using EXAFS/XANES, Raman, and EPR spectroscopy. He currently contributes to the Horizon Europe ERA-Chair project SWEB – Smart Windows for Zero Energy Buildings.
Professor Purāns has authored over 260 scientific publications (h=40) and holds several patents. His scientific achievements have been recognized by numerous national and international awards, including the 2025 Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
His invited lecture at IME-16, “Five Decades of Chromogenic Materials Research at ISSP UL,” highlights the evolution of chromogenic materials research from his pioneering electrochromic studies in 1976 to advanced functional thin films and next-generation smart-window technologies.
